MAF CAL Software Update

MAF CAL has received software update. This article details what has changed since v2.

The new software is version 2-1.

The changes in the software concern the Fail Safe feature and how it operates.

To recap, the fail safe feature works to bypass the MAF CAL unit, ie connect the MAF sensor directly to the engine ECU if for some reason power is cut to the MAF CAL unit.

Additionally MAF CAL will be bypassed if the target signal being sent to the ECU varies by more than 20% from the actual signal being sent to the ECU. If for some reason the MAF CAL unit is not able to achieve the target voltage signal, the fail safe feature will connect the MAF sensor directly to the engine ECU.

The Update

Previously when the difference between target and actual values exceeded thirty percent MAF CAL was bypassed until the engine was restarted.

This was less than ideal because some conditions would lead to the Actual MAF signal differing from the Target signal by more than 20% for a fraction of a second, for example during a gear-change and especially during a gear-change on a turbocharged car, where the pressure is vented back into the intake.

To improve this situation the Fail Safe feature now constantly monitors the difference between Target and Actual. When the difference is greater than 20%, MAF CAL will be bypassed. When the difference becomes less than 20% and after 0.5 seconds after the bypass was initiated, the bypass will be turned off and the engine ECU will resume receiving the modified signal from the MAF CAL.

Brief differences no longer lead to the MAF CAL being bypassed until engine restart. The Fail Safe feature is now dynamic.

The option to manually bypass the MAF CAL unit and the option to switch off the Fail Safe function remain the same as before.

Additionally

Where the tolerance for the deviation was thirty percent before, this has been reduced to twenty percent.

Hardware

Hardware has also been updated slightly to give the MAF output from the MAF CAL even faster response.

Upgrade/Update
