Track Day Alignment – In a Perfect World
January 9, 2026In a perfect world our track day alignment is customised to our tyres, tyre pressures, suspension, current weather, the track and our driving style. In reality the best case scenario probably looks like this…
Track Day Alignment – Best Case Scenario
We know an excellent alignment shop that knows the track, has in-depth experience of the specific model of car and setup (tyres, spring rates etc) and we as customers can give them detailed feedback and the shop can turn our feedback into an optimal setup.
But even this best case scenario is far from ideal
Why finding a track day alignment is so hard
Even the best wheel alignment shop, with all the will in the world, is going to be making a lot of guesses. Sure they can get close and for sure, probably get the car to a place that is miles better than the factory wheel alignment settings but ultimately, they probably aren’t going to be at the track with us, with their equipment.
How to get the perfect track day alignment
To get the best alignment we need data and the best data will come from tyre temperatures. Live tyre temps (tyre surface temps, across the width of the tyre and not the temperature of the air inside the tyre) have been a dream unless we were prepared to spend a thousand+ euro/pound/dollar on an off the shelf tyre temperature monitoring system. Until now.
Suspension Secrets have done an excellent video showing the massive benefits of knowing tyre temperatures and what they can do to get us to the best track day alignment for our car. Unfortunately the tyre temperature monitoring system they used costs thousands.
New, Cost Effective Solution
Over the past year MoviChip has been working on Tyre Temperature Monitor (TTM).
TTM is a self contained solution that will give you live surface tyre temperature data, across the width of the tyre and for a fraction of the price of existing systems.
Goals
The goals of TTM
Easy to fit – Less than a minute
Self contained – No need to wire in to cars power supply
Wireless – Wireless driver display using any Android device with Bluetooth
Visual – See tyre temperatures and deltas across tyre at a glance
Video – Overlay tyre temps onto in-car video footage to see tyre temp behaviour through lap/session
Low Cost – A price that makes purchasing a no-brainer decision
Who is TTM for?
- A driver that wants access to live tyre temps
- A driver that wants to quickly identify if their track day alignment is good ie tyres are worked evenly across their width.
- A driver that wants to perfect an already good alignment
- A driver that wants to understand why a car’s behaviour is changing
- A driver that wants to know if the tyres are overheating and if so where
TTM Benefits
This list could really go on forever…
Some of the most obvious benefits
- Find the optimum operating temperature for any tyre.
- Understand how handling changes according to tyre temperature
- Instantly understand when tyres are starting to overheat/are cold.
- Understand if camber/caster/toe is too much.
- Instantly see if you are using the right tyre type/compound for the car, the track and conditions
- Compare different tyre compounds in terms of temperature
- Instantly understand the effect of tyre pressure changes.
- Instantly understand the effect of alignment changes.
- Understand if the car is under tyred
- Understand how to prolong tyre life
- Understand tyre temperature in terms of lap time
- Understand tyre temps in terms of braking and acceleration
- Understand how driving style is affecting tyre temperature
- Understand roll bar/spring rate adjustments in terms of tyre temperature
The list of benefits goes on and on.
For anyone even remotely serious about driving on track, a tyre temperature monitor is one of those “how did I manage without it” tools.
Yet more pluses
And the hits keep on coming
Extract More Value
A tyre temperature monitor adds value to every penny that has already been invested in the car. Knowing tyre temperatures in real time let’s us get the most from our adjustable dampers, the most from our adjustable roll bars, the most from our caster/camber adjustable top mounts, should the same tyres be bought again or are they overheating/not getting up to temp? The list goes on.
Driver Coaching
And then we have the TTM as a driver coaching tool.
- Is our corner entry style in general/for a particular corner, overheating the tyre?
- Is our braking & turn-in stressing the tyres too much?
- Is there something that we are doing generally that is overheating the tyre/wearing out the tyre unnecessarily?
- Can we apply the power sooner on exit?
- Are we leaving grip on the table in certain corners?
- Is a particular corner loading the suspension in an unusual way?
- Which driving style gives us the best performance for the longest period?
- What tyre temperature gives the best lap time/speed through a corner?
- Which driving style gives the best balance between tyre grip longevity and lap time?
Another endless list, the more we use the monitor to more ways we find to use it.
Wrapping Up
I hope by now I’ve given you the need for a tyre temperature monitor.
